YouTube Words: Markiplier and Game Grumps Word Profile Comparison by Channel

A person’s Word Profile is unique. As you learn to speak and get used to speaking a certain way, you gravitate towards certain words more regularly than others. This profile changes depending on the context of where you are in life and how you let life affect you. In stressful situations you can choose aggressive words, in one-on-one conversations you pick words that signal your shared history with the person, when talking to a crowd of people you choose words that elicit a strong leader role, when talking to a specialized crowd of peers you pick words that only make sense to that crowd because the context is already shared amongst everyone there.

You can find out the Word Profile by finding a person’s word choice when in similar circumstances and how often those people will gravitate towards certain word. You can also go deeper into grammar structure, sentence length, topics and topicality of discussion, but there are limitations to doing this based on how I got my data through YouTube’s subtitles.

What I went looking for was the distinguishing Word Profile characteristics between the Game Grumps channel and Markiplier’s channel, both because they talk a lot through their videos and because they have a substantial collection of videos with a different cast and they have seemingly similar temperament though play primarily different games.

Presented Narratives vs Present Narratives

Does a game’s narrative always need to be presented?

We play games for many reasons. To have a ready-steady shoot-em-up time, to watch over-the-top explosion filled action set-pieces, to have an emotional ride through the struggle of the human condition, to have a few minutes of escape from our current reality in a world completely disjoint from our own. You start up a game (can we really not say “pop-in a game” anymore? Is that obsolete?) and you go in looking for that game to fulfill some criteria for you. Sometimes that criteria is already known. You’re in the mood for a mindless bullet-feast or you’re looking to strum your plastic guitar to some Beetles music or whatever. Sometimes that criteria is unbeknownst to you, so you walk into a game blindly and hopefully some aspect of the game is worthwhile. But does this mean all parts of the game need to be there for you to enjoy it? Are your priorities always the same when you start up a game?

I ask this because of games like the Dark Souls/Bloodborne series approach to how it deals with story, mainly which isn’t really presented to you. The story is present but not presented to the player. The player can read descriptions and text to figure out all that’s going on but they aren’t given a mandatory lecture of the game and its world. The player isn’t even given a synopsis. But is that a problem?

Pre-Impressions: PAX Prime 2015 Indie MegaBooth Part 1

This isn’t a post about what I hit during PAX, since at the time of writing this PAX Prime 2015 hasn’t even happened yet. This is a preview of games that has piqued my interested and am hoping to get my hands on it for a playthrough.

For those that don’t know, Indie MegaBooth is a section of PAX specifically carved out for the Indie developers with something innovative, stylish or fun to get some exposure and hands on the controllers.

There are a lot of great looking games on the list, and while I’m only going to talk about a handful of them I still encourage others to take a look at the indie megabooth site and give a few of them a try or to find me and the indie megabooth developers at the booth during PAX and spend a few minutes finding hidden gems waiting in smaller lines than the over publicized 2 hour linecon that you’ll find in the rest of the showroom floor. Some of these games are already available on Steam and other systems so you can even check them out now.

Gaming Experiences: How I Learned to Stop Caring and Embrace Easy Mode

It might’ve been a pride thing, to show that I had gaming skill and the proper ability to play a game at harder settings, but I used to always look down at Easy Mode as the child’s setting. The be able to make the fewest mistakes in a game, to show that I had such a high proficiency in my gaming ability that making it less difficult was insulting to me. In all reality it was probably just insulting to my ego. But a difficulty setting is important. If a game is too easy, then it’s easy to get bored in the game you lose interest. If you set it too difficult, then having a lack of mastery of the game means that you’re going to get frustrated and likely drop the game at this point. Some games don’t have a means of changing the difficulty and expect the level design to test the player’s proficiency of the game. Look at any Mario Brothers game and you’re hard-pressed to find any adjustable difficulty setting, but go to Megaman or a Shmup or an FPS and they’ll lean on difficulty settings to better tune the game to the player. This is also useful for replayability where players already have an understanding of the mechanics and are returning for a deeper experience. I think we've all held right when the game started on instinct, and if you say otherwise you have some pants that should be moved from some sprinklers.

So yes, I kind of talked about Absolute Drift yesterday, but not really to any analytic sense. I really only touched on the game’s philosophy and stylings. The aesthetic likeness to Japanese Sumi-e art and building up an artistic confidence that experience plus loss of self-doubt can only bring. (Post here)

Let’s Talk About: (Zen and the art of) Absolute Drift

Have you ever seen a Sumi-e painting before? There’s a distinct elegance to looking at a Sumi-e painting because of its minimalism. The use of a single color (black). The confidence in their brushstroke that this line is exactly how I want to look or even the ability to adjust when the stroke came out wrong. Being able to visualize the mystic beauty of the world with only greyed silhouettes. Able to use the void of the whitespace to your advantage, to give more meaning to the color on the page, instead of requiring color to fill all of the canvas.

This is probably why I picked up Absolute Drift in the first place.
